A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a post-processing unit installed in the exhaust system of a diesel engine to capture and reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions from diesel combustion. By means of physical filtration, DPF can effectively capture tiny carbon particles in exhaust gas (often called soot), thus significantly reducing particulate matter emissions
Working principle
The working principle of DPF is based on physical filtration, and its internal structure is usually made of porous ceramic materials (such as cordierite, silicon carbide) or metal mesh. These materials have extremely high filtration efficiency and are able to capture particles with a diameter of 0.1 micron or more. When a diesel engine is running, particulate matter from the exhaust is sucked into the DPF and accumulates on the filter material, thus reducing the amount of particulate matter emitted into the atmosphere

1. Shell:
Material: usually made of stainless steel, with good high temperature and corrosion resistance.
Function: Protect internal components from external mechanical damage and environmental impacts.
2. Honeycomb ceramic carrier:
Material: Common carrier materials include Cordierite, Silicon Carbide and Aluminum Titanate.
Structure: The carrier is designed as a honeycomb structure, the channel is open at one end and blocked at the other end, forming a checkerboard surface design.
Function: When the exhaust gas passes through the porous wall, the particles are trapped on the wall surface, so as to achieve filtration.
3. Catalytic coating:
Material: usually contains precious metals (such as platinum Pt, palladium Pd, rhodium Rh) and some auxiliary materials (such as aluminum oxide, cerium dioxide).
Function: The catalytic coating can reduce the ignition temperature of particles, promote the oxidation combustion of particles, and improve the regeneration efficiency.
4. Blocking end:
Function: one end of the entrance channel is open, and the other end is blocked, forcing the exhaust gas through the porous wall to achieve the filtration of particles

DOC is one of the most important catalysts for diesel engine reprocessing. Its main function is to oxidize the unburned hydrocarbons (HC) in the engine and the carbon monoxide (CO) produced during combustion into harmless water and carbon dioxide. At the same time, it can also convert NO into NO2 for passive regeneration of downstream catalyst particle trap (CDPF) and improve NOx conversion efficiency of SCR. Depending on the emission requirements, it is sometimes necessary to integrate multiple functions on DOC, which also brings great challenges to the design of DOC.
