TWC, Three-Way Catalytic Converter
The three-way catalytic converter is the key component of automobile exhaust treatment system, which is mainly used to purify the harmful substances in gasoline engine exhaust. It converts carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) to harmless carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), and nitrogen (N2) through catalytic reactions.
Working principle
Catalytic reaction: The catalyst is coated with precious metal catalysts (such as platinum, palladium, rhodium), which can accelerate the chemical reaction, so that harmful gases are converted to harmless substances at lower temperatures.
• Oxidation reaction: Carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) react with oxygen (O2) under the action of a catalyst to form carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O).
Reduction reaction: Nitrogen oxide (NOx) is reduced to nitrogen gas (N2) under the action of a catalyst.

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
Diesel particulate filter is an important part of diesel engine exhaust treatment system, which is mainly used to filter particulate matter (PM) in diesel exhaust and reduce solid particulate matter emissions in exhaust.
Working principle
• Physical filtration: Diesel particle filters are usually made of porous ceramic materials (such as cordierite, silicon carbide) to capture particulate matter in the exhaust gas by means of physical interception.
Regeneration technology: In order to maintain the performance of the filter, the DPF needs to be regenerated regularly. The regeneration process can be achieved by passive regeneration (taking advantage of the high temperature of the engine when running) or active regeneration (by means of external heating or post-injection of fuel, etc.)

Why replace the three-way catalytic converter?
1. The performance deteriorates
Power attenuation: When the three-way catalytic converter is blocked or damaged, the engine's exhaust resistance increases, resulting in a decrease in power. If the vehicle has sustained power attenuation (a power drop of more than 15%), it may be that the three-way catalytic converter has failed.
Increased fuel consumption: Blockage of the three-way catalytic converter will affect the engine's combustion efficiency, resulting in increased fuel consumption.
Excessive exhaust emissions: If the performance of the three-way catalytic converter is reduced, the harmful substances in the exhaust gas can not be effectively converted, resulting in excessive exhaust emissions and cannot pass the annual inspection
2. Fault code alarm
Fault code P0420: When the vehicle's fault code shows P0420, it indicates that the efficiency of the three-way catalytic converter is lower than normal and may need to be replaced.
Oxygen sensor failure: The oxygen sensor is a key component to monitor the working status of the three-way catalytic converter. If the oxygen sensor fails, it may cause the efficiency of the three-way catalytic converter to decrease, or even damage.
3. Physical damage
Blockage: Long-term use of inferior fuel or frequent short-distance driving may lead to carbon accumulation or blockage inside the three-way catalytic converter.
Rupture: High temperature or mechanical impact may cause the carrier inside the three-way catalytic converter to rupture, affecting its normal work.
4. Toxic failure
Fuel quality problems: The use of inferior fuel containing more impurities such as sulfur and lead will lead to poisoning of the three-way catalytic converter and reduce its catalytic efficiency.
Lubricating oil problem: Phosphorus, zinc and other elements in lubricating oil can also lead to poisoning of the three-way catalytic converter
Engine failure: incomplete engine combustion, ignition system failure, etc., will cause the unburned mixture to enter the three-way catalyst, produce high temperature, and damage its internal structure

1. Installation position of the three-way catalytic converter
The three-way catalytic converter is usually installed in the middle or rear of the automobile exhaust system, near the engine. The specific location is as follows:
• The front end of the exhaust pipe: the three-way catalytic converter is generally installed between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe, also known as the "exhaust head segment". This ensures that high-temperature exhaust gases can be processed quickly through the catalytic converter
• Between front and rear oxygen sensors: the three-way catalytic converter is located between the front and rear oxygen sensors, which is easy to monitor the exhaust gas treatment effect
• Middle of the exhaust pipe: In some models, the three-way catalytic converter is installed in the middle of the exhaust pipe
